You finally made it.


The bags are unpacked, the kids are excited, and vacation has officially begun.


Then your toddler wakes up at 4:30 a.m. ready to start the day.


Or your baby suddenly refuses bedtime because their body thinks it's three hours earlier.

Traveling across time zones with children can feel like you're constantly doing sleep math. The good news is that most kids adjust just fine with a little patience and a few simple strategies.


As a Sleep Consultant and a parent, I can tell you that perfection isn't the goal. The goal is helping your child get enough sleep to enjoy the trip without becoming overtired and miserable.


Don't Stress About One Bad Night


One rough night doesn't mean you've ruined your child's sleep.


Travel days are exhausting, especially when you are traveling across time zones with kids. Flights get delayed. Naps happen in strollers, car seats, or not at all. Sometimes bedtime is later than planned. That's okay. You may give them a bit more "help" to fall asleep on your travel day than they're used to as independent sleepers. That's also ok.


Think of the first day as a transition day rather than a normal sleep day. You can jump back into independent sleep and make up for lost sleep when you reach your destination.


Follow the Local Time as Soon as You Can

Once you arrive, start treating the destination time as the "real" time. Offer meals according to local time. Put your child down for naps according to local time. Start bedtime routines according to local time.


This helps your child's body begin adjusting more quickly.


For shorter trips of just a few days, some children may never fully adjust before it's time to come home—and that's okay too. The goal is simply helping them get as much quality sleep as possible while you're away.


Sunlight Is Your Secret Weapon

If there's one thing that helps reset the body clock faster than anything else, it's natural light.


Get outside in the morning. Eat breakfast outdoors if possible. Take a walk after waking. Spend time at the playground, pool, beach, or sightseeing.


Fresh air and sunlight help signal to the brain that it's time to be awake, making bedtime easier later.


Protect Sleep Instead of Skipping It

Many parents worry that allowing naps will prevent their child from adjusting. In reality, overtiredness is usually a much bigger problem than napping.


A child who misses sleep can get overtired and often becomes:

  • More emotional

  • More hyperactive

  • Less cooperative

  • More likely to wake overnight


If your baby or toddler still naps at home, continue offering naps during travel. You may need to be flexible about where those naps happen, but sleep is sleep. And while motion sleep is less restorative than crib or bed sleep, it can still help hold your child over until you can get back to your hotel or other accommodations.


If at all possible, try to stick to the schedule 80% of the time. Flexibility is a must on a vacation.


Don't Be Afraid of an Early Bedtime

This is probably my favorite travel tip.


If your child had a rough travel day, skipped a nap, or seems exhausted, move bedtime earlier.


Vacation often involves more activity, more stimulation, and less rest than everyday life. An early bedtime can prevent overtiredness from snowballing into multiple difficult days.


Many parents are surprised to find that their child actually sleeps better when they're tucked in a little earlier during vacation.


Keep the Bedtime Routine Familiar

Everything else may be different, but your bedtime routine should stay the same.


Bring familiar sleep items whenever possible:

  • Sleep sack

  • Sound machine

  • Favorite stuffed animal

  • Bedtime books

  • Lovey (if age appropriate)


Even a shortened version of your usual bedtime routine can provide comfort in an unfamiliar environment.


Kids thrive on predictability, especially when everything around them feels new.


PRO TIP: Pack a sleep bag with all of their sleep essentials. So that when you arrive at your accommodations, if you are up against a nap or bedtime, you are not rifling through your suitcases to find that needed sleep sack or stuffie.


How Long Does It Take to Adjust?

Most children adjust within a few days. Larger time changes typically take longer than smaller ones.


The biggest factors that help are:

  • Consistent sleep opportunities

  • Daylight exposure

  • Avoiding overtiredness

  • Following local time


And honestly? Some children surprise everyone and adapt almost immediately. Others need a little longer. Both are completely normal.


Give Yourself Some Grace

Family vacations create memories that last a lifetime.


They also sometimes involve missed naps, early mornings, and children who fall asleep in strollers while holding half-eaten snacks.


That's normal too.


Protect sleep where you can, stay flexible when you can't, and remember that a few imperfect sleep days won't undo all of the hard work you've put into building healthy sleep habits at home.


Your child will adjust.


When you get home, spend a couple of days to a week sticking to an early bedtime to help your child catch up on sleep and reset to their time zone at home.
