Sleep training can be a game-changer for families, helping little ones (and parents!) get the rest they need. But when grandparents are part of the caregiving team, things can get tricky. Maybe they have their own tried-and-true ways of soothing a baby, or maybe they just love sneaking in extra cuddles at bedtime. We totally get it! But consistency is key when it comes to building healthy sleep habits. Here’s how to gently bring grandparents on board so everyone’s on the same page and your little one gets the sleep they need.
1. Explain Why Sleep Training Matters
Grandparents adore their grandkids, but they might not totally understand why sleep training is important. Take a moment to share why you’re doing it—better sleep means a happier, healthier child (and let’s be real, happier parents too). Let them know that a solid sleep routine helps with mood, development, and even immune health. When they see the bigger picture, they’ll be more likely to support the process.
2. Give the Grandparents a Simple, Clear Sleep Plan
Grandparents don’t need a crash course in sleep science—just some straightforward guidelines. Try writing down the key points, like:
Nap times and bedtime routines
How to set up a sleep-friendly space (think white noise and blackout curtains)
What to do (and not do) during night wakings
Ways to comfort your child that fit the plan
Keeping it simple and easy to follow will make them feel more confident and less overwhelmed.
3. Listen to Their Concerns
Let’s be honest—grandparents might have some opinions about this! Many were raised with different sleep philosophies, like rocking a baby to sleep or responding to every cry immediately. Instead of pushing back, take time to listen. Acknowledge their experience and love, and then explain that the sleep plan is designed to help everyone in the long run.
4. Make Them Feel Included
Grandparents love feeling involved, so invite them into the process! If you’ve worked with a sleep consultant, offer to share what you’ve learned. Show them articles or videos that explain the approach you’re taking. You can even show them your sleep plan. If they feel like part of the team, they’ll be more willing to follow the plan.
5. Celebrate the Wins Together
Once they see how well the sleep plan is working, they’ll be more on board. Celebrate the little victories with them—maybe your baby is falling asleep faster, waking up happier, or settling down without fuss. When they see the benefits firsthand, they’ll be more likely to stick to the plan.
6. Be Patient and Gentle
Change isn’t always easy, and sometimes, grandparents might slip up. That’s okay! Instead of getting frustrated, gently remind them why consistency is important. If they veer off course, offer support and encouragement instead of criticism. The goal is progress, not perfection.
7. Show Your Appreciation
At the end of the day, grandparents just want the best for their grandkids. Let them know how much you appreciate their support, even when they’re adjusting to new ways of doing things. A heartfelt “thank you” goes a long way in keeping things positive and cooperative.
By working together with understanding and patience, you can help grandparents become strong allies in your child’s sleep journey. And when everyone is on the same page, your little one will reap the benefits of a solid, consistent sleep routine—no matter who’s putting them to bed!
